Whipman

Today was the West Linton Whipman Rideout.  The Whipman, selected in secret, is chosen from the community to lead the celebrations with a week of events to attend.  Here he is crossing the ford at the village leading a procession of horses and riders.  It is quite impressive.  A big crowd always gathers at the ford to will them on and, dare I say it, look for a dookin'.  All passed safely on for a ride which in olden times was to mark the village boundaries.  No such requirement now so they just have a good time and a gallop.
