The tiny streets of middle Deal

The narrow streets of middle Deal are where the fisherman and smugglers used to live.  Rumours have always existed that there were tunnels from one house to the next so if the Excise man came knocking at the door silk stockings, brandy, wine, perfume etc from France just cross the channel could very quicky be moved.  It was a lawless place.
Nowadays Deal has a more peaceful feeling to it, the tiny cottages have been bought up by Londoners and gentrified, tunnels and even hidden rooms  have been found.  The smuggling trade still goes on with a much more precious trade of refugees although the smugglers are no longer from Deal or the coast.
