Shutter speeds and helicopters

As the choppers flew over Loch Lomond, I was reminded how important it is to get the shutter speed right. It is easy to think that a fast moving subject needs a fast shutter speed however, anything with propeller blades looks wrong. It looks like it is just hanging in space instead of flying.

Typically, to get the blades to look like they are whirling around, you need to be between 1/60 and 1/125 sec.  The examples here are two quick examples I took to help illustrate. The challenge is holding the camera steady at the slower speed!
