Suffolk

We started the day by revisiting Benjamin Britten's wonderful Red House, only just over a mile walk from the Moot Hall in Aldeburgh.  The gardens were at their absolute best, the volunteers must work very hard.

We then drove to Dunwich.  In Anglo-Saxon times it was the capital of this area, but the town and harbour were eroded away over centuries and now most of the old town is under the waves.  The Greyfriars friary (first extra) was moved higher up to escape the waves but it could not escape from Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries.  The Beach cafe does a magnificent Haddock and chips (second extra)!

Finally we went to the concert in Snape Maltings, which is surrounded by wonderful reed beds (third extra).  We heard a cuckoo in the distance, the first time I have heard a cuckoo in England for many years. The concert in the wonderful concert hall (fourth extra) was brilliant.  Tenebrae were singing, and recording for release on a CD, a mixture of Bach and James MacMillan choral music.  If you don't know James MacMillan, here is a 3 minutes example on YouTube "O Radiant Dawn"
