Day 7 Béjar to Salamanca, 47 miles
We set off in steady rain for the first couple of hours up a steep short climb then down a technical descent with switchbacks, rain and dodger brakes! However all good. We found a fantastic cafe bar where we had cafe and delicious tortilla. We came out to dry weather for the rest of the ride, climbing to our highest point yet 1100m. We passed a couple of Roman mile posts and rode for miles above 900m before a lovely 10 mile descent to Salamanca, entering via the Roman bridge.
Salamanca is stunning. Tall strand stone elegant buildings and narrow streets. We went to the cathedral which is 2 joined together again, old and new. Joined the short queue for tickets €4 and then found out we were about to go on the parapets of the cathedral. Wow! The views of the city and close ups of the cathedral were breathtaking. The carvings around the doors were mesmerising- with all sorts of animals and gargoyles. A recent cheeky restorers carved an astronaut and a gargoyle eating ice cream! Salamanca is a highlight of the holiday
