Covenanters Monument, Bothwell Bridge
This Monument was erected in 1903 by public subscription.
The battle of Bothwell Bridge was a major defeat for the Covenanter army (Scottish Presbyterians opposed to interference by the Stuart Kings in the affairs of the Church of Scotland) against the Government troops lead by the Duke of Monmouth. The catalyst for the Covenanter uprising was the hard-line repression of their open air meetings (known as conventicles) by Government forces. An attempt by Government dragoons to break up a conventicle at Drumclog in Lanarkshire on 1 June 1679 had resulted in a battle victory for the Covenanters.
Following this triumph a confident Covenanter army marched on Glasgow but failed to take the city. A Government army under the Duke of Monmouth hurried north to meet the Covenanters positioned to the south of Hamilton. The overwhelming Government victory at Bothwell Bridge effectively signally the end of the Covenanters' military activities.
But to this very day We Scots still Remember!
Song to go with this is a Rush Track Inspired by our Great Country of Scotland called " Resist"
I can learn to resist
Anything but temptation
I can learn to co-exist
With anything but pain
I can learn to compromise
Anything but my desires
I can learn to get along
With all the things I can't explain
I can learn to resist
Anything but frustration
I can learn to persist
With anything but aiming low
I can learn to close my eyes
To anything but injustice
I can learn to get along
With all the things I don't know
You can surrender
Without a prayer
But never really pray
Pray without surrender
You can fight
Without ever winning
But never ever win
Without a fight
