Life’s a Gas

Not “might be turned off”, or “we’ll let you know when it will be turned off”. Nope, our gas is going to be turned off when they do the work and there’s nothing we can do about it. We must also ensure there is an adult in the property at all times or they won’t be able to turn it back on again. But it should only take a week to do all the work in our road.
Firstly, if the other roads around here are anything to go by, it’ll take a lot longer than a week. Secondly, we don’t need to stay in because we moved our meter to the outside wall years ago (the letter also says they can move your meter to the outside wall if it’s easier for them to connect it up!)
And, finally, they will dig up our drive to lay a new plastic pipe and all they have to do is patch it when they’ve finished. Not too worried about that because we’ve got several patches in our drive from new drains, electricity cables and fibre broadband, so one more won’t matter. We’re planning on having the whole thing resurfaced in the next few years anyway.
Next door far less impressed because they are fanatically proud of their paved drive and cannot bear the thought of it being dug up as they reckon - probably correctly - that it won’t be relaid to their exacting standards.
Once we get the definite date for works to start, a weeks holiday may be in order to avoid the worst of the upheaval…
