On the road again

Today was from Burra to Cowell. 386km or 1616 from home.

The roads in SA are excellent and scenery lovely so far. We travelled the Goyder, Horrocks, Augusta and Eyre Highways. If you read about the people behind the names you get a great history lesson. Mr Goyder mapped the area and created a boundary line which clearly showed where the arid lands of the north came to meet the potential pastoral country in the south. He was very accurate and as you drive along there can be salt bush and small shrubby bushes on the right hand side (the north) and rolling wheat fields on the left. I find this sort of thing of interest where as most people wouldn’t care. I love geography, landforms, architecture and rocks. So far I’ve seen plenty of great things. Most of our family travels for the food but I don’t really care as long as my tummy is full.

The main is an old petrol pump for derelict Sunday and in the extra is a shot of one of our favourite towns called Crystal Book. We stayed 4 nights there last year. The road sign points west for WA where we are heading, last year we headed north at that intersection all the way to Darwin.

The car display had got over its surprise cleaning yesterday and worked as it should.

We are in the first proper caravan park tonight as I want to do some washing and shopping. Cowell is a town of 1069 people situated on Franklin Harbour on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula. Industries are wheat, sheep, jade, fishing and oyster farming. The town was settled as a port for exporting the wheat and wool back in 1880. Named after John Cowell who was a British soldier who served as the Governor of Windsor Castle.  Bizarre. May Gibbs lived just up the road. I’ll have to look out for some gum nuts while I’m here.
