Ancient Tree

This very old Spanish Chestnut is one of 70 Ancient Trees dedicated to the late Queen at her 2022 Platinum Jubilee .

It is growing beside the ruins of Balmerino Abbey and although tradition claims it was planted by Queen Ermengarde when the abbey was founded in 1220 it had core borings taken by the National Trust that indicate it is now around 450 years old. Still a good age and worth stopping off on our run this afternoon to view it.
