Inspired by a plant collector.

This shrub, fothergilla major, was named after an 18th century Quaker plant collector called John Fothergill, physician, philanthropist, botanist and plant collector. I am especially fond of it so was delighted to see that we have a small specimen here in the garden at Gatesbield. It’s just past it’s best, but I hope it will still be flowering on Saturday when the gardens are open to the public.
