Hula hoops

Today I was shooting for the Edinburgh Arts Festival's upcoming new programme in a special school in the South of the city.

The aim of the workshop was to get the children thinking about how things are woven as well as encouraging colour and texture recognition.

The children had a developmental age of around 2 - 4 years (although their physical age was much older) and it was interesting to see how they reacted to the task in hand. Initially skeptic and a bit apprehensive, by the end of the workshop even those who were initially incredibly reluctant to take part were smiling and laughing.

I've worked with autistic kids before and am always impressed by the level of patience and understanding that people who work with children of different needs exhibit in their jobs.

Here's some of their completed work - woven hula hoops!
