Dead or Alive?

Walking along the track through the dunes at Pettycur Bay this afternoon, I spotted something red just ahead.  My first thought was a small copper but the camera's zoom revealed it to be a cinnabar moth (Tyria jacobaeae).  Sadly, it was a deceased specimen.

Just a few paces on, I came across the main image.  A peacock butterfly (Aglais io).  From its appearance, I assumed it had met a similar fate but as I stepped nearer, it suddenly took to the air and flew strongly away over the dunes!  I am amazed at how some butterflies seem to adapt and keep flying even when their wings are severely compromised.
