Newtongrange

I met my friend Vic for lunch at Kaya’s Cafe in Newtngrange, Midlothian.

Newtongrange, a mining village was laid out formally with brick-built houses in parallel streets named First Street to Tenth Street. Segregated by rank within the pit, meant that the simpler dwellings were centrally-located for the miners, while managers enjoyed grander residences on the edge of the village. 

Here is the pit winding wheel from the Lady Victoria colliery, which operated between 1830 and 1981.

Much of the Lady Victoria Colliery makes up the Scottish mining museum.
