Scytale cipher

The Scytale cipher was used by the Spartans as early as the 7th century B.C. A courier would wear a belt containing the secret message upon which was written a series of seemingly unconnected letters. Upon arriving at his destination, we would remove his belt which the recipient would wind around a staff of a specific diameter (the key to the cipher). Sequences of letters would be seen around the staff, only one line would make sense - this was the secret message. Using an incorrect diameter of staff would not reveal the correct message.
I was given this 2013 version today, sadly I can't do it justice in this image but the quality is really nice.
