While it is no doubt true that Neal Stephenson has most likely earned nowhere near as much money as L. Ron Hubbard, I am sure he would rather be a moderately wealthy and respected author of science fiction than a fantastically wealthy hack and a charlatan.

This may be apocryphal, but apparently Francis Ford Coppola once suggested to George Lucas that he establish a religion based on The Force because "that is where true power lies." Thankfully, the only power that George Lucas was interested in attaining was the power to make films his way without studio interference, and thankfully he did attain that power.
