From Darkness into Light
Took part in an organised walk to raise money for suicide prevention this morning. This is big in Ireland and is run every year in many places around the country and abroad. The idea is that you start in darkness and walk 5km until the Sun rises. I did the one in Phoenix Park: congregating at 4.15am we started walking at 4.30 and finished just as the Sun was rising at 5.30. Todays blip is looking back along the procession of people just as the Sun was rising. One estimate of the number of people walking in Phoenix Park alone was 10,000 and countrywide about 100,000 people participated, raising millions of euro to help people in despair. In Ireland 524 people took their own lives in 2019, and, according to the World Health Organisation globally 700,000 people commit suicide every year.
