Siblings
At the end of March I blipped this and asked you to guess what it was. It was the very start of the female larch cone which has now transformed into the young cone in the blip today. Usually I find them attached to a branch on their own but I was delighted to see this one nestling between its elder siblings as it shows so clearly the size, colour and embryonic shape of the baby cone. I have found the transformation quite fascinating and if you are interested you can see other shots in my larch cone series.
Given the wet weather forecast for tomorrow I spent the rest of the day in the garden again and have planted out broad beans, runner beans and courgettes, all raised in the greenhouse, in the hope that they will be well watered in but not frozen! I hope i am right. I also spent time tidying up the flower border, re-potting root bound plants and trimming the edge of the grass. The rest will have to wait until the next dry day.
