More stitches and . . .
I have blipped this book before when I bought it a while back as it was newly published. I have now read it and love it. What a wonderful creation, combining fact, fiction, folklore, dialogue, poetry and prose to tell the story of St Cuthbert and the building of the place where he was to be finally buried - Durham Cathedral. It is a novel like no other. The book spans the ages from the first Viking invaders of the holy island of Lindisfarne in the eighth century through to contemporary England. Along the way we meet monks, brewers, masons, academics and labourers as they tell their own stories. And at the centre of it all is Durham Cathedral and the lives of those who live and work around it. It is a book full of warmth and kindness. A joy.
And this afternoon I found time to get up to date (almost)with the 52 Stitches.
