Day9: Dubrovnik, Croatia
Wow. What a wonderful city and what a history. It’s been around over 2000 years. So the Romans were here. First as a small settlement and then it doubled in size with a gap between . Then came the wall. And it became a city state for circa 500 years. It competed as a trading country by being nice to the mighty Venetian, Byzantine’s, Ottomans….. And then Napoleon invaded and everything changed. More recently Tito made it part of Yugoslavia followed by the break of the USSR and is now part of Croatia with intentions to join the European Union.
We’ll …. I think that’s what our Tour Gide told us this morning!!
And .. at the bottom of the hill is a wide street, the only wide street , which was the link between the two settlements I mentioned earlier and was destroyed in an earthquake in 1667 and led to the redevelopment of the city. Just like the fire of London at around the same time! That was lucky… or opportune.
