Day 16 - The Medieval City of Avila
This morning we travelled for an hour and a half by coach from Madrid to visit the ancient cities of Avila and Segovia. The wall around Avila was recently cleaned and is in amazing condition considering it was built in the 12th century. Avila was where Saint Theresa lived in the 16th century, she was the founder of the Carmelites.
I didn't know anything about Segovia but discovered it has the best preserved Roman Aquaduct. It cuts through the centre of the old town, it is 28 metres high and 813 metres long and was part of a 17 kilometre water system built in the 1st century. The granite blocks fit together without mortar. My plan was to blip this but I need more experience photographing aquaducts.
Segovia also has a massive cathedral built in the 16th century and the castle of King Alfonso VIII, who conquered the Moslems in the 12th century. The war between the Christians and Moslems went on for 700 years. The castle is really a fort and is incredibly ornate.
