Cowra breakout

Cowra, in the central west of NSW, was the site of a World War II internment camp, housing first Italian and later Japanese POWs. On 5 August 1944, eleven hundred and four Japanese POWs attempted to escape from the camp. It was the largest attempted prison escape of World War II and one of the bloodiest. Two hundred and thirty one Japanese and four Australians died.
 
We intend to visit Cowra on our short driving trip to the central west. So watching the movie version of the outbreak is trip planning. Made in 1984, it is still compelling viewing.
