Walking on Simonside

The 7 on their third walk and this time quite a long circular route from Rothbury. The best weather of the week coincided with our decision to tackle Simonside. A highly recommended walk that lived up to expectations.

We started with a gentle stroll along the River Coquet then gradually climbed to Tossen where there was a Pele Tower, characteristic of this region. We then left the beaten track and ascended to the saddle on the Simonside Ridge via meadows, woodland and moorland.

A short but steep climb took us onto the summit ridge where there were extensive views all around in clear, excellent visibility.

An excellent path, paved with big slabs to prevent erosion provided a brilliant walk across the ridge descending at last to a Forestry Commision carpark and then footpaths back to Rothbury.

The evening turned out to be wet, but we had acomplished the walk in fine weather. For our meal tonight we went to the Tankerville Arms in Eglington. A disappointing and expensive meal. We should have looked at and taken note of comments on TripAdviser.
