Herb Paris

Paris quadrifolia. Sometimes know as Lover’s Knot.

This occurs in temperate and cool areas across Eurasia from Iceland to Mongolia.
As its name suggests it has four leaves. A single stem grows up from the junction of the four leaves. This bears a rather stringy white flower and on top of the flower a poisonous purple berry forms.

Groups of the plants are found mainly in woodland on calcareous soil.

At present we are mapping its distribution in the Arnside / Silverdale AONB so if you find any I would be pleased to hear about it.
