Eye Eye, Nose Nose

We often see deer walking around Arniston, but that's 3 or 4 times this week we've seen them in the same area. When Arlo smells their scent in the air, he's into full alert Collie eye mode, when he walks over their scent on the ground, it's nose to the floor and off following it wherever it takes him scooby doo style. Collie's are known for their eye but I'm always impressed with his nose skills and when we hide from him, you can see him following his nose  and can tell where we've been and not been before finding us. Anyway, we're now working on recall from chase, which is likely to take months and has multiple threads and stages. This week, I've at least managed to get him on the lead before he has seen them and begun the chase. Tonight this deer stood for several minutes watching us approach, which Arlo didn't see or smell until quite late, which means my Collie eye is getting better too. This time Arlo just stood and watched before it ran off, without him getting all excited for maybe the first time. Our journey with Arlo is like decoding a puzzle from a starting point of not realising we had a puzzle to solve... fascinating, challenging and very rewarding with small steps, ups and downs, and most of the time would not want it any other way, most haha.
