CN Tower and DowntownToronto: Aerial View
We were treated to a good view of the CN Tower as we approached Toronto airport: the weather was a lot better than at home! Granddog Oona gave us an enormous welcome which went on for about 15 minutes and it's so lovely to be back with our Grandson Paddy again, not to mention his Mum & Dad, for a couple of weeks. Paddy has come on so much in the 11 weeks since we were last here and we're getting some gorgeous smiles.
Construction of the CN Tower began on February 6, 1973, and was completed on April 2nd 1975. At 553.3 metres tall it was the world's tallest free-standing structure for 32 years until surpassed by the Burg Khalifa in 2007 (the latter only held that title for 2 years until the Canton Tower was completed). It's now the 10th tallest freestanding structure in the world but remains the tallest such structure on land in the Western Hemisphere. In 1995, the CN Tower was declared one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. It also belongs to the World Federation of Great Towers. I've visited Toronto a few times over the years and have been up the tower at least twice: I'd like to go up again sometime but I'm not sure if we'll have time on this visit. The view from the top is certainly amazing!
