Chislehurst caves

A school visit today to these really interesting caves, dating back to Druids, Romansand Angle Saxon times. They were used for  carving  out for chalk to be used in brick making for the rebuilding of London after the Great Fire, and flint. During the 2nd WW it was an underground town as the largest deep air-raid shelter outside London... protecting over 15000 people every night during the Blitz. They also grew mushrooms there in 1930s. The left of the collage are the 'cave' rules in the war - hope you can read it (unsurprisingly was very dark!!) 
Now off to tennis.....
