Buying "cleats"
Having managed to avoid the trip until now, I was coerced into accompanying Ottawacker Jr. to Di Salvo Sports on Bank Street, there to assist in the purchase of football boots, or as he calls them. "cleats". What monstrous things have North Americans done to the English language? It turned out that my role was not so much that of an assistant, but of a gatekeeper of the Ottawacker Purse Strings. "Cleats", you see, are a thing of rare expense. A 10-year-old boy can expect to get through at least one pair a summer season (two in this case). So the thought of paying $389 (& taxes) for a [air of Nike Thunderballs (or whatever the name is .. Netbusters or Scrotumclenchers or something like that) made my buttock muscles clench a little. In the end, I pointed out a pair of more reasonably priced ones (the Adidas Arsekickers, I think), and we escaped with a mere $113.99 & tax... Even that... In fairness to Ottawacker Jr., he didn't seem to like the more expensive ones, but the cost of these things is exorbitant.
Then a quick shop and a roast beef for Sunday dinner.
