Peg Woffingtons Cottage

This is one of a row of three cottages in Teddington High Street…oppposite our little Sainsburys where I went this morning for a few provisions! Peg Woffington was a popular Irish actress who came to London aged 20. She was romantically linked with another famous actor David Garrick who lived in Hampton and they planned to marry but never did. She may have lived in one of these cottages or nearby . She collapsed on stage and died at the early age of 40 in 1760. She was buried in St Mary’s Church nearby and there is a memorial plaque in the wall in the church. The plaque says 1759 and there is a rumour that she had the cottages built as almshouses but the history is not clear.

Until a few years ago there was a tea room in one of the cottages…called Peg Woffingtons Tea Rooms. It served a very traditional tea with cakes made by the lady owner. Sadly the owners gave up the cafe when they were too old to run it and no one took over.

A busy day later looking after one grandchild , we went to visit the other two so they could all play together.

Husband nearly better .
