Scotland Street Railway Tunnel
I continued my exploration of Edinburgh's old railway lines and tunnels on my morning run. Scotland Street Tunnel and Rodney Street Tunnel are both part of National Cycle Route 75 with an interesting history.
Scotland Street Tunnel began in the 1840s helping to link Canal Street Station (now named the Waverely) to Granton. However the tunnel was abandoned in 1868 and the station was then used as a coal depot. Amazingly for 40 years from 1887 it was used to grow mushrooms!
The northern portal that you see in the photo is in King George V Park.
The tunnel was brought into use during WWII as an emergency control centre and bomb shelter.
There's no prospect of the 1km long tunnel reopening as the south end was essentially closed off when the Waverley Market was built.
