CAN YOU HONK THAT HORN?

Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis); to tell the truth, black rhinos are not black.....just darker than the White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) which is actually more gray than white....go figure! You can see by the Genus that the two are not closely related.

Native to eastern and southern Africa, the population is Critically Endangered but is increasing due to strong conservation efforts. It can reach a max weight of 3,100 pounds (1400+kg).  The White Rhino, a.k.a. the Square Lipped Rhino, is the largest of the rhino species reaching a max weight for males of 5,100 pounds (2300+kg)...it is a Near Threatened species.

Black rhinos are mostly solitary while the White Rhino is more social. Both are strong and dangerous and that horn, which is actually tightly compressed hair and much like fingernails in composition, can kill. And they are notoriously bad tempered probably due to poor eyesight and an abundance of caution around unfamiliar things.

Unfortunately for the rhinos, Chinese medicine finds the horns to be valuable for certain conditions and the rhinos are killed by poachers just to get the horns to sell on the black market.  Rhino horn is more valuable per pound than diamonds, gold or cocaine...selling for $60,000/pound (1kg=2.2 pounds).  I believe that I am correct in believing that there's an International Ban on trading in rhino horns just as there is in ivory. But it still happens.

This specimen lives at the zoo in Milwaukee.  Best in Large.  BTW....poaching has been known to happen in zoos as well as the wild. For that reason, many zoos are known to saw off the rhino's horn.
