James Watt Dolphins

This painting - James Watt Dolphins - came to mind this week when I was at the Scottish Maritime Museum.

As you walk towards the main building you pass similar anchors, sculptures now, recalling a not-so-distant past.

In conversation with the artist later this week, he talked about the ways in which such objects from Greenock's history, its heritage, could and should become its artwork, with more resonance than many 'more artistic' pieces.

And I thought again about this painting, and those anchors, and what art might be, might mean.
