Blipper’s Last Resort

Picture of Sunday lunch, roast chicken.
It should really be lamb at Easter but Spring Lamb will be at even more of a premium this weekend so will a week or two and for the Jersey potatoes to go with it.
WhenI was growing up chicken was expensive eaten around Christmas and when my grandparents came back from holiday at Fleetwood they would bring one home for us. Lamb legs and shoulders and sirloin on the bone joints proliferated though plus pork from the local pork butcher. The pork butcher here shut years ago.

.
When we were first married and lived in Hereford the carcasses were suspended in the butcher’s shop and we would regularly have sirloin on the bone with the fillet inside despite the fact we hadn’t much money.
In Ramsbottom the butcher’s was on the end of a terrace and didn’t look much but he bought his beef cattle from Barnard Castle and lamb from Shropshire keeping them on his farm for a week or two  to recover from the journey before slaughter in his own slaughterhouse. Both his sons became vets.
I must hasten to add we also ate a lot of fish which came veryfresh from Fleetwood.
