Moroni, Grand Comore
Oh my goodness, what a day! Apparently we were the first cruise ship to visit Moroni in TEN YEARS! Needless to say, the lovely people here pulled out all the stops to welcome us, and boy, did we feel like celebrities!
We were made to feel incredibly welcome, and we were shown so much of the island, it's hard to even remember everything we saw! However I will do my best ... we visited a Ylang Ylang distillery, then we visited ruins from the 1300’s of a Sultan’s palace, a stop at one of our tour guide’s mother’s home where his sister demonstrated how cassava is prepared, a mosque, an ancient sultan’s house (the house, not the sultan), a performance of a traditional wedding dance, another mosque, and a chaotic market place.
An incredible glimpse into a world totally different from the one we are familiar with, and utterly fascinating.
This is a shot of some adorable young boys who were just as fascinated with us as we were with them — they were standing on a parapet above us as we watched the wedding dance performance. I love the cheeky expression on the young man in the turquoise thobe!
