Wilco In Iceland - Night 1
So it all started back on 31/08/22, after a day at a beach, in the car back to where we were staying, I was in the back seat purchasing tickets for Wilco playing 3 nights in Reykjavik. The order went through, but the payment didn't as the 4G network connection was lost. We came out of the black hole and I was surprised that their system allowed me to complete a purchase and I wasn't put at the start of the queue! From then on, our planning for this trip progressed slowly but surely, then frantically.
So here we were, in the city, without having thought much about the gigs, our focus has been on the preceeding 10 day tour for the past few months, and if we had to return without seeing Wilco, we would still be fully satisfied we'd had a great trip.
With a late night last night, this morning there was no atom to get up to, but we had a nice breakfast then walked up to Hallgrímskirkja church which was built between 1945 and 1986!! Hired e-scooters (that was fun) down to Harpa concert hall to pick up our 3 nights tickets, walked along to a great ice cream shop via the Saga Museum about the settling of Iceland - and was disappointed to hear 65000 horses were being exported from Iceland in 1900, most that came to the UK weere used down the coal mines due to their hardiness. Scooted all the way (more fun) back to the Sun Voyager sculpture of a Viking long ship. Back to the apartment then off our for dinner then concert. Ms H is only joining us on Saturday night so went on her merry way.
The Harpa concert hall is stunning inside and out... I will blip photos of it over the next 2 nights too. After a lovely sounding local support singer, Wilco came on and played for 2 hours. We were in centre rear seats on the ground floor and the view was great and the sound was fantastic. With 3 shows and no repeat songs, the setlist was quite different, mainly songs from around 20 years ago. I am thinking this may have been the best Wilco show I;ve been too, often we are up the front, where it is more interactive, but sound and view are impacted, so it was a different experience for us. It was a great show and looking forward to the next 2.
Afterwards, we met Ms H for drink in a bar she was at - go you Ms H! I'm glad we'd not been thinking about these shows much until this evening and that they are at the end of our trip when we are winding down.
Extra, extras!
