Refugees
Toddled along to the Village Hall to listen to a talk on Cumbria and refugees expecting a talk on The Windermere Boys.. But no, I was educated on the subject of the Spanish Civil War and the 4000 children who came as refugees to the UK, 100 to Cumbria. Sad to hear of the little girl , now age 92 still living in Ambleside because her parents died in the Civil war so she stayed here. Then there were the Czech families who came to the UK when Hitler invaded first the border areas, then known as Sudetenland and then the rest of what was then Czeckslovakia . And this was all before the Jewish children who have made Windermere more famous as a place of refuge. The speaker had concentrated his research on the 1930s , for all I know there are more , earlier and later. After all here we are in 2023 hosting refugees from Ukraine. It shows nothing changes.
Very interesting and sobering.
