Woody Wednesday (5th April 2023)
We had an hour of gardening in drizzly grey weather until eleven o'clock when we went inside for tea and hot cross buns as the rain developed and then called it a day. Refna had done some more work on the driveway patch and cleared out the pond. I'd moved the plants from the porch to outdoors and cleaned the bird feeders. Two of the new acers in the porch had deteriorated, possibly from catching the sun too much the other day, and the camellia hasn't recovered from the extreme frosts we had in the winter.
Having seen the snake's head fritillaries at Lacock on Monday I checked on the area in the Woodland Garden when I got back, where we had planted a stack of bulbs of them last autumn.
Today, to my surprise two had appeared, but I suspect they were a pair that had established themselves from previous years, and were why I chose the same site for the newer bulbs, of which there are as yet no signs. Unusually, the one in Extras is pointing upwards, revealing some of its rarely seen inner workings. Better to blip one from my own garden than anywhere else.
They are wildflowers (Fritillaria meleagris), so I'm pleased to enter them for 2023 Wildflower Week's debut, with thanks to Miranda1008 .
