He was a medical officer in Egypt in 1945, after having served in Europe during the war. Cholera broke out but he didn't inoculate the troops under him - and there wasn't a single case of cholera. However, where other troops had been inoculated, there had been cases of cholera. He liked telling this story. "Why was that?" we always asked. "Because the people who weren't inoculated knew the dangers and they took the proper precautions," he said.

He was a just, moral, thoughtful man who, as you can see in the photo taken a few years before he died, mellowed beautifully.
