The Sir Nigel Gresley
The latest of several steam trains to pass through Nuneaton in recent days, but, the only one I have managed to catch.
There are very few places where you can get an unobstructed view particularly of the side of the train. It wasn't stopping at the station, and by the time it had got a further mile up the track here, it was going at a fair lick.
This loco, a LNER A4 Pacific class was named after the train engineer who designed and built many steam trains, was built in Doncaster and entered service in 1937.
In 1959 it was the first advertised and scheduled passenger train running at over 100mph and reached a post war top speed of 112mph on a special steam traction service.
Its sister (or is it brother), the Mallard achieved the top speed for a steam loco of 126mph hauling a total of 240 tons! These engines have an output of 2,500 indicated Horse Power and weigh 175 tons.
The Sir Nigel Gresley started a complex overhaul and rebuild in September 2015 but it was completed and returned to service only in 2022, three years after the original date.
In the few seconds it took for this train to speed by, you could tell it is a thoroughbred machine.
