DDW's May Challenge: Open
For her last real day of England I took Erica up to the north Norfolk coast for some final windswept appreciation of the beauty of this area. We spent the morning doing some shopping, having a proper greasy full English breakfast, that kind of thing, then hopped on a train up to Cromer. We were planning on walking along to another village, but got a little distracted once we arrived.
We went straight for a cup of tea (this really has been a tea shop tour of England), then found our way down to the pier by following out noses towards that delicious sea smell. After admiring the waves crashing, walking out on the pier, and marvelling at the few people learning to surf we spotted an interesting looking destination and thought we'd try for it. So we set off eastwards along the clifftops. Eventually we found a lighthouse and a golf course, but before that there were a lot of stops to admire the view.
I may not be a waterbaby, but I still love the ocean, especially when there's just nothing to be seen by wide open waters, perhaps with a container ship on the far horizon. I like to imagine someone standing on a coast somewhere beyond sight, looking out towards my little clifftop and wondering what they'd see. Even the wind adds joy to it all - this is where God's world cannot be tamed. I think I'll be back out that way a few times this coming summer.
We turned around and walked back to the town, stopping to watch a man drive a tractor around the beach for a little while first. He looked a little grumpy, otherwise I might possibly have asked him why he was doing doughnuts in the sand. By that time the sun had given up and we decided we'd walked off our breakfasts and were ready for a hot chocolate. That did mean being treated to a rendition of 'Australians? In Norfolk?', some disbelief that was quelled by expressing our admiration of the local countryside.
We choo choo'd back to Norwich and went to a pub for dinner. It wasn't incredible, but it was pretty good and filled the long-walk-in-the-wind gaps in our stomachs. Our day was concluded with some tv, then me sitting watching Erica pack.
Then it was over, it was time to sleep. I tried to stitch this photo yesterday, but lost my control points and gave up for the day. I reckon it looks better a little larger. ;)
