Pier

After traveling back into Rhyl to visit my Mum, I headed a couple of stops west along the coast to Colwyn Bay.

The rambling second hand bookshop that my Dad used to bring me to as a child (as I chased down the 70+ Biggles books in existence) has long gone, but it was good to have a wander round.

Heading along the beach toward Old Colwyn I discovered what remains of the once grand Victoria Pier - no longer jutting into the sea but at least giving elevated views along the coast, and nicely restored/recast and painted iron work. The long saga relating to the loss and decay of the Victoria Pier, and the relative success of this restored, simple boardwalk, can be perused on the National Piers Society website. There remains hope that what is now the second shortest pier in the UK may be extended further in the future. 

Turning back inland I walked a mile or so out of town to Colwyn Bay FC. For most of their existence  the Bay competed in the English non league system, but a few years ago they hit financial difficulties and moved across to the Welsh pyramid. They are now working their way up the leagues and currently sit top of the table in the second tier with just a few weeks of the season left.

Today's visitors were Penrhyncoch. It was a comfortable 3-0 win for Colwyn Bay in front of 650 supporters.

It proved to be a sunny day at the seaside.
