Scott Antartic Memorial

A trip to Cardiff to get some photo's printed out and then on to Penarth to visit my dad for a couple of hours. It was raining all the way from Herefordshire.

I stopped in Cardiff Bay to take a photo' and like this Scott memorial set against The Norwegian Church. 

 Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team of men sailed from Cardiff Bay on 15th June 1910 on their fated expedition to the Antarctic. Their ship, Terra Nova left as crowds of Cardiff residents lined the dock to watch this momentous occasion.
They hoped to be the first people to reach the South Pole. Cardiff was chosen as the starting point because the city had raised the most money to help fund the expedition. Of course, it was also helpful that they could load the finest quality Welsh steam coal to fuel their trip.
Ironically the memorial is next to the Norwegian church. Unfortunately for Scott, Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen beat him to be the first to arrive at the South Pole. Sadly Scott and his crew all perished on their return journey. You can see Scott's head pushing out of the front of the icy looking memorial as he walks steadily towards the South.

We're off out tonight to our village hall for a ceilidh dance as my former work colleague who lives in the next village invited us. I haven't been to one since my college days. I had two left feet then and I don't think anythings changed!
