Pitching For Net Gains
Today's image is not the most glamorous shot (although I did like the lines and the geometric shapes) I've ever taken but it does represent the creation of an important amenity for local people.
When we first saw chain link fences appear across a large part of our local recreation ground we assumed the worst - I may have mentioned in previous blips that we've started to call them "the fences of doom". As soon as you see them appear nearby it almost always results in the loss of yet more of our local green spaces or fields for even more new housing.
We have had thousands of houses built within a radius of just a few miles of our house with planning applications pending to add thousands more. There is a current application to build 1600 houses surrounding our neighbouring village of Eccles - double the total number of houses already in the village! It's completely unsustainable - especially as there is never any accompanying improvement in infrastructure or local amenities (no new roads, schools, doctors' surgeries, shops, parks or green spaces). Planning applications are usually turned down by our local authorities but nearly always passed by government planning inspectors on appeal.
The fences at our recreation ground were a happy exception - it was not lost to housing but to build a new community 3G sports pitch for which our local football club managed to secure a million pounds through funding from sports bodies and their own fundraising. Great work guys!
My apologies for the earlier rant but I just had to get it off my chest!
