Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

The sex life of the Savoy.

As we grow older together, a good friend never tires of reminding me that we humans are unusual animals in that we are born as butterflies but die as caterpillars.

Today this put me in mind of our last over-wintered Savoy cabbage. I had planned to serve it up for Sunday dinner but it has suddenly bolted. What was, a few days ago, a splendid round cabbage, fit for the picking, has suddenly metamorphosed into a mass of tangled flower spikes that have burst through the enfolding leaves. Perhaps not quite as spectacular as a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, but pretty damned impressive all the same! Amazing stuff that DNA.
