Hastings Clock
This commemorative clock was donated to The City of Rotherham by James Hastings, who owned a furniture store in the town centre. The Council accepted his offer of a clock on November 16th, 1911 and built 1912. This is a duplicate of one in Douglas, Isle of Man. It was originally sited in Effingham Square. At one stage, it was proposed to relocate away from the town centre but after a public outcry in the local press it was restored to its present location in Walker Place, 1969.
The inscription on the front of the base says:
"TO COMMEMORATE THE CORONATION OF KING GEORGE V AND QUEEN MARY"
It is an ornate clock with faces on all four sides; supported by a quatrefoil column which has a street light suspended from each side. Mechanism made by John Mason of Rotherham, frame by Macfarlane of Glasgow and made of Cast-Iron.
The whole area has been off-limits as part of a reorganisation project of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. The building at the back is The Civic Building, and along with that, the other buildings are to be demolished as well.. If it gets moved again, I don't think it has far to go as another outcry might ensue. Our tax money working for them, I guess. While at the Town Centre, a bit of entertainment in the form of Native Music.
I would have liked to have blipped something else due to the railings all around the place, and no matter who I asked, they won't let a "little girl" in on a "hard-hat area"! That's what they said.. But, I'm pressed for time (quite a contradiction isn't it, as I'm giving you time here on my blip, LOL) and can't go off looking for another monument/memorial to replace this. Lots of things needed sorting before we set off.. Flight tomorrow is at 12noon, have to be at Heathrow airport by 8am, so need to set off from South Yorkshire at 3am to allow a few minutes stop-over so Mr M can rest from driving, lest he falls asleep on the wheel.. I hope I have time to blip one more before take-off so I won't miss a day as flight is 16 hours straight, 6 hours stop over then another 2 hours.. Quite tiresome, but all worth it knowing I'll be with my loved ones after that..
As of publishing, I've still no idea which monument/memorial to blip tomorrow at that ungodly hour..
