The Luddite Cropper.

What a beautiful sunny day. Perfect for our recce of the Luddite Trail ( 2)
We started at St Peter’s Church Hartshead.
On our way we passed this statue in Sparrow Park at the top of Knowler Hill.
This is the Luddite Statue of a cropper with his shears which weighed in excess of 40lbs.
His small daughter at his side.

The extra photo tells you more about how the Luddites stormed Cartwright’s Mill, Rawfolds, Cleckheaton on 12th April 1812. However Cartwright was ready for them with armed militia men, and they were defeated.
17 men were later hanged at York, and several of the Luddites who died in the attack were buried secretly in St Peter’s church yard.

We finished the walk with a cuppa and slice of apple pie and ice cream ( custard for MrC ) at Bennett’s Cafe and Bistro, Liversedge.
We were surprised how busy it was on a Monday afternoon, but soon realised that was because of the friendly staff, delicious food and reasonable prices. Will certainly be back.

Just hoping the weather will be as good when we do the walk with the Pudseys on the 6th April. It was 15C when we got home.
Very pleased that all my washing had dried outside.

I was very pleased that my foot was just aching slightly when we finished the 5 mile walk. That’s the most I have done since injuring my foot.
