IT'S MOTORHEAD SUNDAY

Today's submission is a 1917 Detroit Electric car.  It used standard lead/acid batteries but, certainly, not the type shown in the extra photos.  They were, however, connected in series.  Modifications to the system shown have been made to allow for 12 volt battery usage.  Originally, the batteries were the 6 volt type.

One curious thing I gleaned from reading the above....it says there are "5 forward gears and 5 reverse gears."  I suspect there are 5 lever positions for each direction to gauge speed.....I don't think electric cars have gears as we Gearheads perceive gears.  If there's an expert out there who knows differently, please correct me.  I don't know a whole lot about electric cars except that they are a whole lot more expensive these days than in 1917.

Please knote in the final Extra photo the knife switch that shuts off/engages the flow of electricity.  It could easily serve as an anti-theft device of the day.  Best viewed in Large.
