Waterside memorial
I did not know Mark Riley, nor do I know how he died, but it was on the 23rd of March, 2006, at the age of 35. This is what the little plaque fixed to the rockface tells me, one of three memorials I saw today when picking my way across the shelf near the boat ramp at Mosquito Bay.
Perhaps Mark's folks wanted him to be remembered near his favourite fishing spot - it's possible, even, that his boat capsized in a storm, or he was washed away by a big wave when fishing off the rocks (not too unusual a tragedy on our coast). Whatever happened, it seems the family still visit this place. The flower may have withered, but it and the Easter bunny and the chocolate egg were clearly placed here in March. There must be some significance in this for the Rileys.
