Details above

Today’s u3a Art Appreciation group today used BBC Moving Pictures to study a embroidered 19c kimono from the Edo period in Japan.
Using the Google Arts & Culture app we can zoom in really close to look at the detail , up to individual stitches. It was fascinating and we also learnt a lot about Japanese culture in that period. The kimono in question was probably designed for a courtesan to entertain kabuki actors as it showed scenes from kabuki plays ; chichi lions, a mythical bridge, peonies etc.

It also gave me the opportunity to bring out a modern wedding kimono I bought in Japan in the 2000s. It has the similar padded hem and as the tallest member R had the job of modelling it!

A great session .
