Derwentwater

A shot of the lake from just below the Theatre on the Lake, Keswick.

It was pretty wet all the way on our journey up this morning. We stopped at Country Harvest for a coffee and couldn’t see Ingleborough at all!

Next stop was Grasmere. A bit brighter and drier here and for once the car parks weren’t rammed. We did the Riverside Walk into the town and went into the Herdy shop and the amazing jigsaw shop, managed to resist the jigsaws.

Last year, on the same visit, we bought a Herdy mug to celebrate her late Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. They were a limited edition and we were lucky to get one as they nearly sold out on the first day. We thought it was great fun so we asked if there were any due for the coming Coronation of King Charles III. Not in yet but apparently they had to be pre ordered.

Continuing on to Keswick we had a cuppa here by the Lake. The boat was loading with passengers and soon after departed in a shaft of light coming through the clouds above Catbells. We walked back into town where there are some very nice shops around the Moot Hall and called into Wetherspoons for a drink. We’ve been before and it’s a pretty special building, the former courthouse. It’s called ‘The Chief Justice of the Common Pleas’. Whatever you think of the chain I do like the way they maintain these interesting buildings. We sat in the court room with its banked rows for the gallery, the judges bench and the dock for the accused.
You can have a table in one of the three holding cells at the back if you want to but they were all full today.

We are now in our hotel in Borrowdale where we are staying for a couple of nights as it is our wedding anniversary tomorrow (48!) A nice change for us as we usually stay in the South Lakes area.

Looking forward to dinner with a free glass of fizz!
