A Newt Dines on Wood Frog Eggs in a Vernal Pond
My husband and I took our bikes up to the Barrens via Tow Hill, and we hiked about four miles from there on a gorgeous, sunny afternoon. I had the opportunity to check out a number of vernal ponds. They are all looking good and they are getting ready to rock and roll with springtime amphibian follies.
I saw my first newt, my first wood frog egg mass, and my first butterfly on this day, as winter turned into spring. The butterfly was small and brown, far too fast for me. But here is a photo of the newt dining on wood frog eggs! Nom nom nom!
The first thing I thought when I saw this event happening was - out in the woods, this is the true hunger games, where everybody eats everybody else. So my soundtrack song is The Hanging Tree, from The Hunger Games. Here is the original, and here is the rebel remix, which I also enjoy.
